The Beloved Days for Voluntary Fasting
Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is a highly recommended Sunnah that the Prophet ﷺ regularly observed and encouraged.
The Practice of the Prophet ﷺ
'Ā'ishah رضي الله عنها said: 'The Prophet ﷺ used to fast Mondays and Thursdays' (Nasā'ī 2361, Ibn Majah 1739).
Why These Two Days?
The Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on Monday, and he said: 'That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I received revelation' (Muslim 1162).
Regarding Thursday, he ﷺ said: 'Deeds are presented (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting' (Tirmidhi 747, authenticated by Al-Albānī).
The Virtues and Benefits:
1. Emulating the Prophet ﷺ
Following his regular practice brings us closer to his way of life.
2. Deeds Presented to Allah
On these days, our deeds are shown to Allah. Being in a state of fasting when your deeds are presented is highly meritorious.
3. Regular Spiritual Training
Weekly fasting maintains spiritual discipline throughout the year, not just in Ramadan.
4. Expiation of Sins
Voluntary fasting is a means of erasing minor sins and gaining Allah's pleasure.
5. Shield from Hellfire
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Fasting is a shield from the Fire just like the shield of any of you in battle' (Ahmad 8404).
Practical Guidelines:
• Intention: Make the intention to fast the night before or before Fajr
• Flexibility: If you miss a Monday or Thursday, there's no makeup required as it's voluntary
• Consistency: Try to maintain this practice regularly for maximum benefit
• Breaking Fast: Break your fast with dates and water, following the Sunnah
• Not Obligatory: These fasts are voluntary, so don't feel guilty if you miss them due to circumstances
Important Notes:
• Don't fast if you're making up missed Ramadan fasts (prioritize obligatory over voluntary)
• Women should not fast during menstruation or post-natal bleeding
• Those who are sick or traveling may skip voluntary fasts
• Don't fast if it will harm your health or affect your obligations
