Ramadan Fasting

The Blessed Month of Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the month in which the Quran was revealed. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

The Command of Allah

Allah says: 'O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous' (Qur'an 2:183).

The Foundation of Islam

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Islam is built upon five pillars: testimony that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, paying Zakat, pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan' (Sahih Bukhari, Book of Faith, Hadith 8).

The Etiquette of Fasting

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Fasting is a shield. When one of you is fasting, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice; and if someone attacks him or insults him, he should say: I am fasting' (Sahih Bukhari 1904).

The Rewards of Ramadan:

  1. Forgiveness of Sins: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven' (Bukhari 38, Muslim 760).

  2. Gates of Paradise: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When Ramadan enters, the gates of Paradise are opened' (Bukhari 1899).

  3. Gates of Hell Closed: 'The gates of Hell are closed' (Bukhari 1899).

  4. Devils Chained: 'The devils are chained' (Bukhari 1899).
