The Middle Prayer
The Asr prayer is the middle prayer of the day and holds special significance in Islam. It is one of the two 'cool prayers' along with Fajr.
The Command of Allah
Allah says: 'Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient' (Qur'an 2:238). The 'middle prayer' refers to Asr, emphasizing its importance.
The Severe Warning
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if he has lost his family and wealth' (Sahih Bukhari, Book of Prayer Times, Hadith 552). This severe warning shows the critical importance of not missing this prayer.
The Reward of Asr
Like Fajr, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever prays the two cool prayers (Fajr and Asr) will enter Paradise' (Sahih Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Hadith 574).
The Time of Asr
Asr begins when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length (after Dhuhr) and continues until sunset. It is recommended to pray it before the sun becomes yellow.
Benefits of Asr Prayer:
-
Protection from Loss: Missing Asr is likened to losing everything valuable.
-
Path to Paradise: Consistent performance of Asr leads to Paradise.
-
Middle Prayer: Being the middle prayer, it represents balance in worship.
-
End of Day's Work: It marks the transition from the day's activities.
