The Blessed Dawn Prayer
The Fajr prayer is the first of the five daily prayers, performed at dawn before sunrise. It is one of the two 'cool prayers' that hold special significance in Islam.
The Command of Allah
Allah says in the Quran: 'O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer, and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you...' (Qur'an 24:58).
The Great Reward
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever prays the two cool prayers (Fajr and Asr) will enter Paradise' (Sahih Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Hadith 574). This shows the immense reward for those who consistently perform Fajr prayer.
The Virtue of Fajr in Congregation
Praying Fajr in congregation is especially meritorious. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever prays Isha in congregation, it is as if he prayed half the night; and whoever prays Fajr in congregation, it is as if he prayed the whole night' (Sahih Muslim, Book of Prayer, Hadith 656).
The Time of Fajr
Fajr begins at true dawn (when the first light appears on the horizon) and ends at sunrise. It is recommended to pray it early within its time, as the Prophet ﷺ would hasten to perform prayers at their earliest times.
Benefits of Fajr Prayer:
-
Protection from Hellfire: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No one who prays before sunrise and before sunset will enter Hell' (Sahih Muslim).
-
Blessing for the Day: Starting the day with prayer brings barakah (blessing) to all activities throughout the day.
-
Spiritual Awakening: Waking up for Fajr strengthens discipline and connection with Allah.
-
Witnessed by Angels: The Quran mentions: 'Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed' (Qur'an 17:78), referring to the angels who witness the Fajr prayer.
