Jummah Prayer - The Friday Prayer

The Blessed Day of Jumu'ah

Friday is the most blessed day of the week, described by the Prophet ﷺ as 'the best day on which the sun has risen' (Muslim 854). It is the weekly Eid of Muslims, a day of gathering, worship, and abundant blessings.

The Command of Allah

Allah commands believers: 'O you who have believed, when the call is proclaimed for prayer on Friday, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew' (Qur'an 62:9).

Recommended Acts on Friday:

  1. Perform Ghusl (Ritual Bath): The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Ghusl on Friday is obligatory (wajib) upon every adult' (Bukhari 877, Muslim 846). The best time is after Fajr, before going to the mosque.

  2. Use Siwak (Toothstick): Clean your teeth with siwak and apply perfume, as cleanliness and pleasant appearance are emphasized.

  3. Wear Your Best Clothes: Dress in clean, presentable clothing as a sign of respect for this blessed day.

  4. Go Early to the Mosque: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever performs ghusl, comes early, walks (not rides), sits close to the imam, listens attentively, and does not engage in idle talk will have the reward of fasting and praying for a whole year for every step he takes' (Ahmad 15551, Abu Dawud 345).

  5. Recite Surah Al-Kahf: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light that shines for him between the two Fridays' (Hakim, Bayhaqi). The time extends from sunset Thursday to sunset Friday.

  6. Send Abundant Salawat (Blessings) upon the Prophet ﷺ: He said: 'Send blessings upon me abundantly on Friday, for your blessings are presented to me' (Abu Dawud 1047, Ibn Majah 1085).

  7. Make Du'a During the Hour of Response: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'There is an hour on Friday during which, if a Muslim happens to pray and ask Allah for something good, He will give it to him.' The most likely time is the last hour after 'Asr prayer until sunset (Bukhari 935, Muslim 852).

  8. Listen Attentively to the Khutbah: It is obligatory to listen quietly to the Friday sermon. Speaking during it is prohibited and nullifies the reward.

The Significance

On this day, Adam was created, entered Paradise, and left it. The Day of Resurrection will also occur on a Friday. These events make it the most virtuous day of the week.
