About Dhuhr Prayer

Dhuhr Prayer - The Midday Prayer

Dhuhr is the second of the five daily obligatory prayers, performed when the sun begins to decline from its zenith (highest point) at midday. It marks a spiritual pause in the middle of the day and consists of four rak'ahs of fard (obligatory) prayer, recited silently.

It also has a well-established set of Sunnah rak'ahs before and after it, making it one of the richest prayers in terms of voluntary worship.

Significance & benefits

The Command of Allah

Allah says: "Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night…" (Qur'an 17:78). Ibn 'Abbas explained: "'The time when the day begins to decline' refers to Dhuhr" (IslamQA 1092).

The Reward of Sunnah Prayers

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays four rak'ahs before Dhuhr and four after it, Allah will forbid him to the Fire" (Sunan Abu Dawood 1250, Tirmidhi 428).

Building a House in Paradise

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays twelve rak'ahs during the day and night, a house will be built for him in Paradise: four before Dhuhr and two after, two after Maghrib, two after 'Isha, and two before Fajr" (Tirmidhi 380, classed as saheeh by Al-Albani).

Accountability on the Day of Judgment

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The first thing for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is corrupt, then the rest of his deeds will be corrupt" (Tirmidhi 413).

Benefits

  1. Spiritual Pause: A break from the world's demands to reconnect with Allah at midday.
  2. Protection from Hellfire: Performing Dhuhr with its Sunnah prayers protects from the Fire.
  3. House in Paradise: Regular Sunnah rak'ahs with Dhuhr contribute to the twelve that earn a house in Jannah.
  4. Expiation of Sins: The five daily prayers collectively expiate minor sins between them (Muslim 233).
  5. Spiritual Renewal: Mid-day prayer resets focus, sincerity, and gratitude for the rest of the day.

How to perform / practice

Time

Dhuhr begins when the sun passes its zenith (highest point) and a shadow begins to grow. It continues until the shadow of an object equals its own length — which marks the beginning of Asr time. This can be looked up using any reliable prayer time application or local schedule.

How to Pray

  1. Perform wudu.
  2. Pray four rak'ahs of Sunnah before Dhuhr (recommended — confirmed Sunnah).
  3. Pray four rak'ahs of fard Dhuhr — recited silently.
  4. Pray two rak'ahs of Sunnah after Dhuhr (recommended).

Making Up Missed Sunnah Prayers

If you are unable to pray the Sunnah before or after Dhuhr at the correct time (e.g. at work or school), it is prescribed to make them up later — even after Asr — because the Prophet ﷺ himself used to make up missed Sunnah prayers (Tirmidhi 426, IslamQA 146713).

Congregation

Pray in congregation at the mosque when possible. Prayer in congregation is 27 times superior to praying alone (Muslim 650).

On Fridays

Dhuhr is replaced by Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) for those obligated to attend it.
