About Fajr Prayer
Fajr Prayer - The Dawn Prayer
Fajr is the first of the five daily obligatory prayers, performed at dawn before sunrise. It is one of the two "cool prayers" (along with Asr) that hold special significance in Islam.
It consists of two rak'ahs of fard (obligatory) prayer, preceded by two rak'ahs of Sunnah mu'akkadah (confirmed Sunnah). It is the prayer whose recitation the Quran describes as "ever witnessed" by the angels of the night and the day.

Significance & benefits
The Command of Allah
Allah says: "Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and [also] the Qur'an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed" (Qur'an 17:78).
The Great Reward of Congregation
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays Isha in congregation, it is as if he prayed half the night; and whoever prays Fajr in congregation, it is as if he prayed the whole night" (Sahih Muslim 656).
Path to Paradise
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays the two cool prayers (Fajr and Asr) will enter Paradise" (Sahih Bukhari 574).
Ishraq: The Bonus Reward
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, then prays two rak'ahs, will have a reward like that of Hajj and 'Umrah — complete, complete, complete" (Al-Tirmidhi 485, classed as saheeh by Al-Albani).
Benefits
- Protection from Hellfire: "No one who prays before sunrise and before sunset will enter Hell" (Sahih Muslim).
- Witnessed by Angels: Both the angels of the night and the day gather at Fajr time — making it one of the most spiritually significant moments of the day (Qur'an 17:78).
- Protection by Allah: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever offers the Morning Prayer is under the protection of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime" (Ibn Majah).
- Blessing for the Day: Starting the day with prayer brings barakah (blessing) to all activities.
- Sign of Faith: Consistent Fajr reflects a deep commitment to Allah — it is one of the heaviest prayers on the hypocrites (Sahih Bukhari 657).
- Spiritual Discipline: Waking for Fajr builds the strongest habit of self-discipline a believer can have.
How to perform / practice
Time
Fajr begins at true dawn (al-fajr al-sadiq — when the first light spreads along the horizon) and ends at sunrise. The Prophet ﷺ would hasten to perform prayers at their earliest times. It is highly recommended to pray it as early as possible.
How to Pray
- Perform wudu (ablution) — this is a precondition for any prayer.
- Pray the two Sunnah rak'ahs before Fajr — these are strongly recommended (Sunnah mu'akkadah) and should not be skipped lightly. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than the world and all it contains" (Muslim 725).
- Pray the two fard rak'ahs of Fajr.
- Recite aloud in Fajr — both rak'ahs are recited aloud (when praying in congregation, the imam recites aloud; when alone, you may recite aloud or quietly).
- Pray in congregation at the mosque whenever possible — the reward is 27 times greater than praying alone (Muslim 650).
- Remain in your place after Fajr, making dhikr until sunrise, then pray two rak'ahs of Ishraq to earn the reward of a complete Hajj and 'Umrah.
Important Notes
- If you miss Fajr due to sleep or forgetfulness, make it up as soon as you wake — the Prophet ﷺ said there is no sin for the one who forgets or sleeps (Abu Dawood 435).
- The two Sunnah rak'ahs of Fajr may be made up after sunrise if they were missed along with the fard.
